September 1st, 2011 - All Fairfield's coastal swimming areas are open. Results from samples collected Tuesday monrning were all at acceptable levels with the exception of Lake Mohegan. Lake Mohegan remains closed.

All Fairfield’s swimming areas are currently open. The Waterfront Director has advised us that jellyfish are being seen but their presence varies from day to day. In addition, the Health Department has recently received reports of individuals experiencing swimmer’s itch at both Southport and Penfield beaches. Please see the information below on tips to prevent swimmer’s itch.

Due to rainfall amounts on up to this point today, the Lake Mohegan swimming area will be closed the remainder of today Thursday, June 23 and tomorrow Friday, June 24th.

While the coastal swimming areas are currently open, rainfall amounts are close to the closure levels for those areas and additional forecasted overnight rainfall may lead to closure of all swimming areas tomorrow. Please check this site tomorrow morning after 8am for further updates.

We discontinued the new email subscription feature for now since emails were only going out once per day in the evening which doesn't help beach-goers much since most closure decisions and notifications are made early in the morning. This site will still be updated the morning of any closure and we will work on finding a better automated notification system.

The results from all 3 sets of samples collected from the lake this week continue to be elevated and these results have indicated that the water is recovering very slowly; results from further sampling will be available the afternoon of Tuesday 8/31/10.

All swimming areas reopened on 6/20/09 for the 6/19/09 closure, and Lake Mohegan has reopened today 7/23/09, after being closed due to heavy rainfall on 7/22/09.
